Galveston lost 40,000 trees to Hurricane Ike’s salt water flooding. Re-establishing our urban canopy is a top priority. The goal is to re-establish a diverse and more sustainable urban tree canopy by the end of 2014.

Commitment To Affordable Housing

Galveston is currently dealing with an issue of rebuilding and replacing low income housing destroyed by Hurricane Ike. This current situation has led us to ask, "whose responsibility is it to care for those who do not have or cannot afford reasonable housing?"

Small Business Development

Small and Local businesses are the backbone of our Island economy, and Galveston's hard working business owners and employees buy their goods and groceries in Island retail establishments, recycling those funds many times over. Galveston's local government supports local businesses, so let us know if you have a small business or a good idea that we can champion!

Welcome to the New Vision of Galveston


Build, Proceed and Grow. It is time.

 

During the last Texas legislative session a respected State Representative visited Galveston to receive an award. He had a refreshing perspective on our Island. He said to the audience: "I hear requests for money and support from cities all over Texas; I know how tough it is in many communities. But look at Galveston: You have the Beach, UTMB, the Port, Moody Gardens, Historic Districts and The Strand, West End luxury homes, great restaurants. You have a sense of place! I know communities that would love to have just one—any one—of these great attributes!"

Of course, we are not quite Nirvana. What city is? But when you consider things closely, we are a remarkably fine community. 

Part of our charm is our diversity. That was the case 150 years ago when immigrants of numerous national origins made this town—like this nation—great. Today we have a mixed community, and that's why Becca and I moved here over 16 years ago. We're raising our kids in a community that doesn't favor one class, race or group over another...
